Protests Erupt Over Toxic Waste Transfer in Madhya Pradesh; Dhar Collector Addresses Concerns

3 January, 2025; Dhar, Madhya Pradesh — Protests have escalated at the Pithampur bus stand in Dhar as locals oppose the proposed transfer of toxic waste from Bhopal’s Union Carbide factory to their region. The contentious plan has raised environmental and safety concerns among residents, prompting the administration to step in and address the situation.

Speaking on the matter, Dhar Collector Priyank Mishra assured the public that their concerns are being taken seriously and urged for calm. “The police and administration are controlling the law and order situation arising as a result of the protest organized at Pithampur bus stand against the UCIL waste being brought here,” he stated.

Mishra emphasized that no decisions would be implemented without thorough consultations with the local community. “I want to tell everyone that no action will be taken without taking people into confidence,” he said, adding that the administration is committed to adhering to strict scientific protocols to ensure safety.

In response to the widespread apprehension, Mishra pledged transparency. “We are not proceeding without keeping in mind the scientific measures. We will still clear all the doubts; there is nothing to hide,” he affirmed.

The toxic waste in question originates from the infamous 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, a catastrophic industrial disaster that resulted in thousands of deaths and long-term environmental damage. Efforts to safely dispose of the remaining waste have been fraught with controversy, as residents in proposed disposal sites express fears of contamination and health risks.

In a firm message to protesters, the Collector urged citizens to refrain from unlawful activities. “Everyone is urged to not take law into their hands at any cost,” Mishra stressed.

The administration has assured that dialogue with stakeholders will continue and that a scientific approach will guide any further actions. Meanwhile, the situation remains tense in Pithampur as the local community seeks greater clarity and assurances regarding their safety and environmental well-being.

The developments reflect the ongoing challenges in addressing the legacy of the Union Carbide disaster while balancing the rights and concerns of affected communities.
