8 January, 2025; The eagerly awaited Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project marked another milestone today as the final speed trials were conducted on the Katra-Banihal section. This critical phase, conducted under the mandatory supervision of the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), brings the ambitious rail link project closer to operational readiness.
The trials were carried out on two iconic engineering marvels: the Anji Rail Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, and the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge. These structures represent the cutting edge of engineering prowess and are poised to redefine connectivity and transportation in the challenging terrains of Jammu and Kashmir.
Anji Rail Bridge: India’s First Cable-Stayed Bridge
The Anji Rail Bridge, connecting Katra and Reasi, is a testimony to the ingenuity of Indian engineers. Designed to withstand the region’s complex geological and seismic conditions, the bridge features a single pylon towering at 331 meters above the riverbed. With 96 cables supporting the structure, it ensures stability and durability while standing as a symbol of India’s advancing infrastructure.
Chenab Rail Bridge: The World’s Highest Railway Bridge
Spanning the mighty Chenab River at an incredible height of 359 meters, the Chenab Rail Bridge is a marvel of engineering excellence. This arch-shaped bridge, constructed using over 28,000 metric tons of steel, has been meticulously designed to endure wind speeds of up to 266 km/h and seismic activities, making it a global benchmark in railway infrastructure.
Significance of the USBRL Project
The USBRL project is a game-changer for Jammu and Kashmir, aiming to integrate the region more closely with the rest of India. Once operational, the project will provide a seamless all-weather rail link, boosting trade, tourism, and connectivity in the region. The Katra-Banihal section, in particular, is expected to significantly reduce travel time while offering safe and efficient transportation through some of the most rugged terrains in the country.
With the completion of the final speed trials, the USBRL project is nearing its long-awaited commissioning. These iconic bridges not only showcase India’s engineering capabilities but also promise to transform the socio-economic landscape of the region. As the nation awaits the project’s formal launch, it stands as a beacon of progress and innovation in modern infrastructure development.
