In a recent statement, Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Annapurna Devi, expressed her satisfaction with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) electoral success in Delhi, highlighting the significance of having a “double-engine government”—a term used to describe the same party governing both the state and central governments. She emphasized the added pride of having a woman Chief Minister in Delhi, asserting that this unified governance would drive development and meet the expectations of Delhi’s residents.
The BJP’s victory in the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections marked a significant political shift, ending a 27-year period during which the party was not in power in the capital. The BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats, while the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) obtained 22 seats. This win was bolstered by promises to improve public education and provide free healthcare and electricity services.
Rekha Gupta, a 50-year-old former student leader of the BJP, was appointed as the Chief Minister of Delhi following the party’s victory. She became the fourth woman to hold this position in the capital and is currently one of only two female Chief Ministers in India, alongside Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal. In her inaugural address, Gupta acknowledged the challenges ahead, including tackling pollution and enhancing infrastructure, and expressed her commitment to addressing these issues.
Prior to the elections, Atishi Marlena of the AAP served as the Chief Minister of Delhi from September 2024 to February 2025, following Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation. Atishi was the youngest and third female Chief Minister of Delhi. Despite the AAP’s electoral loss, she retained her seat in the Kalkaji constituency and currently serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
The transition to a BJP-led government in Delhi signifies a pivotal change in the city’s political landscape. With both the state and central governments aligned, there is optimism about more cohesive policy implementation and development initiatives aimed at benefiting the residents of Delhi.
