In a recent statement, Rekha Gupta, National Vice President of the BJP Mahila Morcha, has raised serious concerns regarding the conditions at ‘Asha Kiran,’ a shelter home operated by the Delhi government. The facility, which is intended to provide care for disabled individuals, has come under scrutiny due to a troubling number of deaths and alleged neglect.
Alarming Death Toll
According to Rekha Gupta, a shocking 27 residents have died at ‘Asha Kiran’ in 2024 alone. Even more concerning is that 17 of these deaths occurred in the month of July. Gupta has pointed out that the administration has not provided clear reasons for these fatalities, leading to heightened anxiety and suspicion about the conditions within the shelter home.
Lack of Transparency and Access
Gupta has criticized the administration for its lack of transparency and restricted access to the facility. Despite repeated attempts, she claims that she and others have been denied entry, leaving many questions unanswered. The SDM inquiry results remain undisclosed, and officials have allegedly kept the gates closed, preventing any independent assessment of the situation.
Allegations of Neglect and Poor Conditions
The allegations extend beyond the death toll to the overall living conditions at ‘Asha Kiran.’ Gupta asserts that residents are being subjected to severe neglect. Reports suggest that the children are receiving dirty water, inadequate food, and insufficient medical treatment. Such conditions, if true, point to systemic failures in the care and management of the facility.
Calls for Inquiry and Accountability
In her statement, Gupta has called for a thorough inquiry into the operations of ‘Asha Kiran.’ She demands that all officers involved in the administration of the shelter home be held accountable and punished if found guilty of negligence. This call for action aims to ensure that such tragic incidents do not recur and that the residents receive the care and protection they deserve.
