West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called on protesting doctors to return to their duties to provide much-needed medical assistance to the public. Amid escalating protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor within a Kolkata hospital, Banerjee welcomed the Calcutta High Court’s decision to transfer the investigation to the CBI and urged the agency to conclude the case by Sunday. She also demanded capital punishment for the perpetrator, assuring the victim’s family that justice would be served.
The Chief Minister criticized political parties for “engaging in cheap politics” during the crisis and stressed the urgent need for healthcare services to resume, as the ongoing protests have severely impacted patient care. “I urge doctors who have not yet resumed their duties to do so immediately. Three people, including a minor and a pregnant woman, have already died,” Banerjee stated.
In a heartfelt plea to the protesting doctors, Banerjee said, “If it will make you happy, I am willing to touch your feet and request that you return to your duties to help those in need. Three lives have already been lost, including those of a child and a pregnant woman.”
