Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde Proposes Bharat Ratna for Ratan Tata

11 October, 2024;Navi Mumbai, October 2024 — In a significant statement, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has proposed that Ratan Tata, the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour. Speaking at an event in Navi Mumbai, Shinde referred to Ratan Tata as an “anmol ratan” (precious gem), emphasizing his unparalleled contributions to India’s industrial growth, philanthropy, and nation-building.

“Ratan Tata is not just a businessman; he is an embodiment of integrity, dedication, and vision. His work has uplifted millions of lives, and his contributions extend beyond the corporate world. He is truly a jewel of the nation. We have formally proposed to the Centre to confer the Bharat Ratna upon him,” Shinde stated.

The announcement was met with widespread support, with many acknowledging Tata’s influence in shaping modern India. Under his leadership, Tata Group expanded globally, acquiring iconic brands such as Jaguar Land Rover and Corus Steel, while maintaining a strong focus on ethical business practices. Beyond business, Ratan Tata has been a leading philanthropist, contributing to causes such as healthcare, education, and rural development.

Shinde highlighted Tata’s role in key projects that have positively impacted Maharashtra and the country at large. “From infrastructure to healthcare, Ratan Tata’s initiatives have left an indelible mark. He has always placed the country’s interests above personal or corporate gains,” the Chief Minister added.

Ratan Tata, 86, has been a recipient of numerous accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan. His company has been a beacon of corporate social responsibility, with the Tata Trusts, under his leadership, being one of India’s largest charitable organizations.

This proposal has reignited the debate on who should be the next recipient of the Bharat Ratna, with Ratan Tata emerging as a strong candidate due to his unparalleled contributions to Indian society and business.

The decision on the Bharat Ratna is made by the Government of India, and if conferred, Ratan Tata would join the ranks of previous industrialists like J.R.D. Tata, his predecessor, and the founder of the Tata Group, who was also awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1992.

CM Eknath Shinde’s proposal has already garnered support from various quarters, and many believe it is only a matter of time before Ratan Tata’s name is added to the prestigious list of Bharat Ratna awardees.
