23 October, 2024;As Cyclone ‘Dana’ approaches the eastern coast of India, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is fully prepared to manage the impact and ensure the safety of affected communities. Speaking ahead of the expected landfall, NDRF Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mohsen Shahedi outlined the extensive measures that have been put in place.
According to DIG Shahedi, a total of 20 NDRF teams have been deployed across Odisha, one of the states expected to bear the brunt of the cyclone. Additionally, 13 teams have been stationed in West Bengal, while 4 teams are being kept in reserve, ready for any contingencies. To ensure preparedness in other vulnerable regions, he confirmed that arrangements have also been made in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizag, with 9 teams positioned in Jharkhand.
“Our goal is to maximize evacuation efforts today before the cyclone makes landfall tomorrow,” said DIG Shahedi. He emphasized that the teams are equipped with specialized rescue gear, boats, medical aid, and other critical resources to assist those affected by the cyclone.
Cyclone ‘Dana’ is expected to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and storm surges to coastal areas, potentially causing widespread flooding and damage. Local authorities in these states are working closely with the NDRF to ensure that people living in low-lying and vulnerable areas are evacuated to safer locations well in advance of the storm’s arrival.
The NDRF has a robust history of responding to natural disasters, and their strategic deployment aims to minimize loss of life and property. With this advance preparation, DIG Shahedi expressed confidence that they are well-equipped to handle the situation as it unfolds.
As the clock ticks down to the landfall of Cyclone ‘Dana’, the NDRF remains on high alert, ensuring all measures are in place to protect and support the affected regions. Local residents are urged to follow government advisories, evacuate promptly if instructed, and stay indoors during the cyclone to ensure their safety.
