Bengaluru, October 30, 2024 – Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has addressed recent concerns surrounding alleged waqf land encroachments in the state, making it clear that the government has no intention of evicting farmers who have long held possession of the property in question. The controversy, which has attracted attention across Karnataka, revolves around accusations that individuals and families occupying waqf land might face eviction.
In his statement, CM Siddaramaiah reassured affected farmers, stating, “I have already made a statement. We have not issued any notice to the farmers, and we are not going to evict anybody who has been in possession of the property for many years.” He stressed that the government’s approach would remain compassionate and would prioritize the welfare of those who depend on this land for their livelihoods.
The controversy reportedly began following a survey of properties managed by the Karnataka Waqf Board, which oversees lands donated for religious or charitable purposes under Islamic law. Several political leaders, as well as local communities, raised concerns over reports that large portions of land currently used by farmers may be considered waqf property, potentially subjecting the occupants to eviction notices.
In his response, Siddaramaiah emphasized that any decisions on the waqf land issue would be made with utmost caution, ensuring the protection of farmers’ rights. He criticized the rumors that fueled public unrest, labeling them as “unfounded fears” that only serve to create distrust between the government and citizens.
“Our priority is the welfare of our farmers and residents. We are fully committed to upholding their rights and ensuring they continue to live without fear,” said the Chief Minister. He also highlighted that any action on this issue would be preceded by thorough examination and consultation with all relevant stakeholders, including the Waqf Board, farmers’ representatives, and legal experts.
The Chief Minister’s statement comes amid a politically charged environment, with opposition parties accusing the state government of not adequately protecting the interests of the farming community. The opposition has argued that the alleged waqf land encroachment issue could disrupt the lives of numerous families and disturb social harmony in the state.
In response to these criticisms, CM Siddaramaiah reiterated that his government is focused on promoting peace and stability and would carefully navigate this sensitive matter. He stated that all necessary actions would be taken to ensure fair and just solutions without compromising the rights of those who have been on the land for extended periods.
As the state government works to address these concerns, Siddaramaiah’s assurance has brought some relief to farmers and local communities. However, the waqf land controversy remains under the spotlight, with citizens, community leaders, and politicians closely watching the state’s next moves on the issue.
