New Delhi: A heated exchange in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday drew sharp criticism from Congress MP KC Venugopal, who condemned what he described as “defamatory and derogatory remarks” directed at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the party. The incident occurred during the Zero Hour session when BJP MP Nishikant Dubey was allowed to speak on an issue, leading to a contentious moment in the house.
Venugopal expressed dismay over the incident, calling it unprecedented in parliamentary history. “Today, a very unfortunate incident happened in the Lok Sabha. Congress leaders raised the issue of the travel ban imposed on the Leader of Opposition (LoP) to Sambhal. Instead of addressing the matter, defamatory words were used against the LoP, Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi, and the Congress party,” he stated.
The Congress MP accused BJP members of using derogatory language as a distraction from the party’s long-standing allegations against industrialist Gautam Adani. “From day one, Rahul Gandhi has stood firmly against corruption. Ever since he started questioning the Adani-Modi connection, agents of Adani have been relentlessly attacking him,” Venugopal alleged.
In his remarks, Venugopal called on Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to take immediate action against the member who used such language. “We demand an apology from the member who made these statements. The Speaker must ensure that such incidents do not recur and take necessary action to uphold the dignity of the house,” he added.
This incident highlights the growing polarization in Indian politics, with parliamentary proceedings frequently turning into arenas for partisan clashes. The Congress has reiterated its commitment to holding the government accountable while maintaining that the dignity of the parliamentary discourse must be preserved.
The Speaker’s response and any subsequent actions are keenly awaited as the Congress continues to press for an apology and greater decorum in the Lok Sabha.
