New Delhi, September 12, 2024 – The Communist Party of India (Marxist) lowered its flag to half-mast today at its headquarters in New Delhi, following the demise of the party’s General Secretary, Sitaram Yechury. The veteran leader passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the early hours of the morning after battling a severe respiratory tract infection that had worsened in recent days, leading to complications, according to a statement from the CPI(M).
Yechury, aged 71, was a towering figure in Indian politics and the leftist movement. Known for his eloquent speeches, deep ideological commitment, and ability to build consensus within his party and across the political spectrum, Yechury had been at the helm of CPI(M) since 2015. His leadership saw the party navigate through a challenging political landscape as it sought to maintain relevance in a rapidly changing India.
Born on August 12, 1952, Yechury joined CPI(M) during his college years at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where he quickly emerged as a student leader. He spent over four decades in the party, shaping its policy, spearheading protests, and advocating for the rights of the working class. Yechury also served multiple terms in the Rajya Sabha, where he was known for his powerful interventions and debates on national issues.
News of his death sent shockwaves across the political community, with leaders from various parties expressing their condolences. In a message, CPI(M) paid tribute to Yechury’s contribution, stating, “He dedicated his life to the cause of the working class, peasants, and marginalized communities. His loss leaves a void in the political sphere that will be hard to fill.”
As a mark of respect, party offices across India have lowered their flags, and condolence meetings are being organized in several states. Yechury’s passing marks the end of an era for CPI(M), and his absence will undoubtedly be felt across the political spectrum.
His funeral will take place later this week, with several senior political figures expected to attend and pay their respects to one of India’s most prominent leftist leaders.
