New Delhi, May 2 — A spell of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms wreaked havoc across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday morning, severely impacting flight operations and daily life. According to officials at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, over 100 flights were delayed and at least 40 were diverted due to the adverse weather conditions.

The sudden downpour, accompanied by strong winds and thunder, led to waterlogging in several parts of the city, exposing significant gaps in the capital’s monsoon preparedness. Commuters faced major challenges during the morning rush hour as traffic snarls, water-clogged roads, and public transport delays brought parts of the city to a standstill.
Areas including South Delhi, Connaught Place, and parts of Noida and Gurugram reported heavy water accumulation, making movement difficult for vehicles and pedestrians alike. Many office-goers were seen wading through ankle-deep water, while emergency services struggled to manage the situation amid the peak-hour chaos.
Despite the disruption, the rainfall did bring a welcome relief from the scorching heat that had gripped the region over the past week. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall for Delhi-NCR, but the intensity of the showers took many by surprise.
Airport authorities have advised passengers to check their flight status with the respective airlines before heading to the airport, as weather-related delays and diversions continue. Ground staff and emergency response teams have been deployed in full force to manage the situation and ensure passenger safety.
The Delhi government has yet to issue an official statement on the city’s rain readiness. However, civic authorities have begun water drainage efforts in low-lying areas and appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary travel.
This incident once again highlights the need for robust infrastructure planning and efficient water drainage systems in urban areas to prevent recurring chaos during the monsoon season.
