9 May, 2025; In a significant move to strengthen its defense and intelligence capabilities, India has announced plans to launch 52 spy satellites over the next five years. This ambitious initiative is expected to revolutionize the country’s space-based surveillance systems and bolster national security.
According to defense and space experts, the decision has been heavily influenced by the strategic use of satellite technology in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The war has underscored the vital role that real-time satellite imagery and geospatial intelligence play in modern warfare, from tracking troop movements to identifying critical infrastructure and coordinating missile strikes.
India’s upcoming fleet of reconnaissance satellites will enable the military and intelligence agencies to monitor key locations across the Indian subcontinent and beyond. These satellites will likely use high-resolution optical and radar imaging systems, allowing for day-and-night, all-weather surveillance.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), along with defense sector partners, will lead the development and deployment of these satellites. The program will include a mix of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, equipped with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and electro-optical sensors, designed to provide continuous updates on military and civilian activities of interest.
Experts believe that the deployment of these satellites will significantly enhance India’s capabilities in intelligence gathering, border monitoring, maritime domain awareness, and disaster management. They also see this move as part of a broader effort to secure strategic autonomy in the space and defense sectors.
The initiative aligns with India’s growing emphasis on space as a critical domain of defense. In recent years, India has conducted a successful anti-satellite (ASAT) missile test, created a dedicated Defence Space Agency (DSA), and increased collaboration between the armed forces and ISRO.
