MAY 06:Imtiaz Ali has expressed that the likelihood of a “Jab We Met” sequel happening is minimal. He humorously questions the need for a sequel, suggesting that fans continue to enjoy the original film instead. “Why have a sequel to Jab We Met?” he laughed during a conversation with News18 Showsha. “If people want to keep relishing the film, they can keep watching the first one! There has to be a compelling story and a reason to make ‘Jab We Met 2’. But let’s see if it happens. Never say never!”
In 2020, Imtiaz directed “Love Aaj Kal” featuring Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan, which served as a spiritual sequel to his 2009 movie starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. However, the sequel didn’t fare well at the box office, which Imtiaz playfully dismisses as not being the deterrent for creating a sequel to “Jab We Met.” He admits, “I made ‘Love Aaj Kal’ the second time, and it wasn’t as well received. Just kidding! That’s not the reason why I don’t want to make a sequel to ‘Jab We Met’. But a sequel should only be made for a really passionate reason.”
Despite the successful collaboration on “Jab We Met,” Imtiaz and Kareena Kapoor Khan have not worked together since. Imtiaz explained that their non-collaboration is not due to a lack of fondness but rather the absence of a project that is sufficiently distinct or superior to their previous work. “Whenever you work with an actor, there’s also a responsibility to not do anything just for the sake of it,” he explains. “The idea is to reunite only when there’s a better or a completely different project than what you’ve done before. ‘Jab We Met’ was such a fruitful collaboration that I wouldn’t want to ruin that experience by presenting a mediocre script just to keep our association going.”
Currently enjoying the success of his latest film “Amar Singh Chamkila,” Imtiaz remains committed to quality, emphasizing the importance of an interesting project for any future collaborations with Kareena. “It has to be something interesting, otherwise, it’s pointless. We don’t want to tarnish the memory of ‘Jab We Met’. If you’ve had a great experience working with an actor, you want the next one to be just as good, if not better. That’s how I see it,” he concludes.
