10 March, 2025;A recent fashion show held in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, during the holy month of Ramzan has sparked significant controversy and public outcry. The event, organized by the designer duo Shivan and Narresh to mark their brand’s 15th anniversary, featured models showcasing ski-wear designs against the snow-covered backdrop of the popular ski resort on March 7, 2025.
The timing and nature of the fashion show have been widely criticized by political leaders, religious figures, and social activists, who have labeled the event as “obscene” and insensitive to local cultural and religious sentiments during Ramzan. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his disapproval, stating that the images he had seen showed a complete disregard for local sensitivities, especially during this holy month. He has ordered an inquiry, directing local authorities to submit a report within 24 hours, after which appropriate action will be taken.
Kashmir’s chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, condemned the event as “outrageous,” questioning how such an event could be tolerated in a region known for its Sufi culture and deeply religious outlook. He called for immediate accountability for those involved, asserting that obscenity in the name of tourism promotion would not be tolerated in Kashmir.
People’s Conference president Sajad Lone also criticized the timing of the event, describing it as “eminently avoidable” during the holy month of Ramzan. He emphasized the importance of mutual respect and sensitivity to cultural norms, suggesting that hosting such an event during this period was inappropriate.
In response to the backlash, Elle India, which had posted a video of the fashion show on its Instagram account, removed the content following public uproar. The organizers, Shivan and Narresh, issued an apology, stating that their sole intention was to celebrate creativity and the ski and après-ski lifestyle. They acknowledged the concerns raised and apologized for any unintended discomfort, expressing their commitment to being more mindful and respectful in the future.
As the controversy continues, the Jammu and Kashmir government awaits the findings of the inquiry to determine the appropriate course of action regarding the event and its organizers.
