5 January, 2025; Vasco Da Gama, Goa – In a significant boost to India’s maritime security, Secretary of Defence Production, Sanjeev Kumar, presided over the launch of two state-of-the-art fast patrol vessels (FPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). The event, held at the shipyard in Vasco Da Gama, marks another milestone in India’s commitment to bolstering its coastal and maritime defense capabilities.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Sanjeev Kumar emphasized the strategic importance of these vessels in enhancing maritime security, particularly in counter-piracy and anti-narcotics operations. “The deployment of these fast patrol vessels along the maritime boundary with Pakistan and other countries underscores India’s resolve to safeguard its waters against emerging threats. These vessels are a testament to our indigenization efforts and the capability of our shipbuilding industry,” he stated.
Key Features of the Fast Patrol Vessels:
- High Speed and Agility: These vessels are designed to operate at high speeds, enabling quick interception of suspicious activities in Indian waters.
- Advanced Surveillance Systems: Equipped with state-of-the-art radar and monitoring systems, they enhance real-time surveillance and threat detection capabilities.
- Versatile Capabilities: Besides counter-piracy and anti-narcotics missions, the FPVs are equipped to handle search and rescue operations, pollution response, and maritime law enforcement.
- Indigenous Design and Build: Built under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, the vessels highlight the prowess of the country’s defense production sector and its commitment to self-reliance.
The deployment of these vessels is particularly significant in the context of increasing maritime challenges in the region, including illegal trade, piracy, and transnational crimes. With a coastline of over 7,500 kilometers, India’s maritime boundary demands robust surveillance and rapid response capabilities.
The Indian Coast Guard, as the nation’s premier maritime enforcement agency, plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and security of Indian waters. The addition of these FPVs to its fleet will enhance its operational readiness and ability to respond to dynamic maritime threats.
The ceremony concluded with Sanjeev Kumar congratulating the shipbuilding team and reaffirming the government’s commitment to equipping the armed forces with cutting-edge technology to safeguard the nation’s interests.
As India strengthens its maritime security infrastructure, these fast patrol vessels symbolize a critical step toward a safer and more secure coastline.
