19 November, 2024; Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh – Ahead of the crucial by-elections in the state, senior Congress leader Pramod Tiwari has expressed strong confidence in the INDIA alliance’s performance. Speaking to the media, Tiwari stated, “INDIA alliance will win all the 9 seats. Our candidates, contesting under the Samajwadi Party symbol, are receiving overwhelming support from the public.”
Tiwari also emphasized the importance of a fair electoral process, urging the Election Commission to ensure impartiality. “I would request the Election Commission to guarantee that the elections will be fair. It is vital for maintaining the democratic fabric of the country,” he remarked.
Criticism of CM Yogi Adityanath
Responding to a statement by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Tiwari drew parallels between historical events and the BJP’s current political strategy. Referring to the colonial era, he said, “The East India Company came and enslaved us by following the principle of divide and rule. It was the Congress Party that gave the slogan of ‘Purna Swaraj’ (complete independence).”
He accused the BJP of employing similar tactics in today’s political landscape. “The BJP is also following the same principle of divide and rule, and that is why it propagates a message of hatred. This approach is not in the interest of the nation,” Tiwari added.
Alliance Dynamics in Uttar Pradesh
The by-elections in Uttar Pradesh hold significant political weight, serving as a litmus test for the INDIA alliance—a coalition of opposition parties aiming to challenge the BJP’s dominance. In the state, the Congress and Samajwadi Party are cooperating under a shared strategy, with candidates contesting on the Samajwadi Party symbol but with united backing from the alliance.
This collaboration reflects a growing trend among opposition parties to consolidate forces against the BJP, especially in electorally crucial states like Uttar Pradesh.
Looking Ahead
As campaigning intensifies, all eyes are on the Election Commission to uphold the integrity of the electoral process. The results of these by-elections are expected to provide insights into the evolving political equations ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Tiwari’s remarks underline the high stakes involved, not only for the INDIA alliance but also for the BJP as it navigates challenges in one of India’s most politically significant states.
