Odisha Gears Up to Tackle HMPV Cases: Public Health Director Highlights Preparedness

6 January, 2025; Bhubaneswar, Odisha: Amid rising concerns about Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, Public Health Director of Odisha, reassured citizens that the state is fully prepared to address potential challenges. Speaking about the current situation, Dr. Mishra emphasized the importance of heightened surveillance and monitoring to contain the spread of the virus.

While the Government of India has not issued specific guidelines for HMPV, a press release has been circulated, outlining the steps to manage the situation effectively. Dr. Mishra stated, “No specific guideline has been issued by the Government of India, but they have issued a press release. We are geared up to tackle any situation.”

HMPV is a respiratory virus that typically causes mild to moderate symptoms, similar to those of a common cold or flu. However, it can pose serious risks for young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Addressing public concerns, Dr. Mishra clarified that the virus is “moderately transmissible, not highly transmissible,” which underscores the need for vigilance without creating unnecessary panic.

The state health department has already initiated heightened surveillance measures, including closely monitoring symptoms in vulnerable populations and ensuring the availability of medical resources. Public awareness campaigns are also being considered to educate citizens about preventive measures such as maintaining hygiene, wearing masks, and seeking medical attention for respiratory symptoms.

HMPV infections, though not a new phenomenon, have gained attention due to their similarity to other respiratory illnesses like influenza and COVID-19. Dr. Mishra’s proactive approach aims to ensure Odisha remains equipped to handle any eventualities while maintaining transparency with the public.

The health department urges citizens to remain calm, follow basic preventive measures, and stay informed through official channels. With heightened surveillance and robust preparation, Odisha is well-positioned to manage the situation effectively.
