Omar Abdullah Blames BJP for Worsening Situation in Jammu and Kashmir Post-Abrogation of Article 370

In the wake of the recent terror attack in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference leader Omar Abdullah has strongly criticized the BJP, holding them accountable for the deteriorating security situation in the region. Abdullah’s remarks came as a pointed response to the BJP’s earlier claims that the abrogation of Article 370 would lead to lasting peace in Jammu and Kashmir.

A Critical Perspective on Article 370 and Militancy

Omar Abdullah stated, “They (BJP) were claiming that entire militancy is linked with Article 370 and after its abrogation, peace would prevail here.” He argued that his party had consistently maintained that Article 370 had no bearing on militancy in the region. “We continuously said that Article 370 had nothing to do with militancy and even if it is removed there won’t be any effect on militancy. This has been proved now,” Abdullah asserted.

Accountability and the Worsening Situation

Abdullah emphasized that the BJP’s claims about Article 370 have been proven incorrect and that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has worsened since its abrogation. “They (BJP) are being ignorant…the situation is worsening day by day…who is responsible?” he asked. He further stated, “When we were in power, we used to be blamed for such attacks so today, it is BJP that is responsible for these attacks.”

Ineffectiveness of Airstrikes

Highlighting the ineffectiveness of military actions such as airstrikes, Abdullah mentioned, “Airstrikes were conducted earlier as well but did the attack stop? They exaggerated about Balakot strikes, but militancy didn’t stop.” He challenged the BJP to provide assurance that airstrikes could eradicate militancy in the region entirely, adding, “If they can assure that by conducting airstrikes, they can free the whole J&K from militancy, then we are ready to listen.”

A Call for Reassessment

Omar Abdullah’s comments reflect a broader call for reassessing the approach to handling militancy and security in Jammu and Kashmir. By questioning the BJP’s strategies and pointing out the continuing violence, he underscores the need for a more effective and comprehensive policy.

Conclusion

The Kathua terror attack has reignited the debate over the impact of the abrogation of Article 370 on Jammu and Kashmir’s security. Omar Abdullah’s sharp critique of the BJP’s policies highlights the ongoing challenges in the region and calls for accountability and a reassessment of current strategies to ensure peace and stability.
