28 April, 2025; In a strong move following the Pahalgam attack, the Indian government has banned 16 YouTube channels operating from Pakistan. This action targets both major media houses and individual content creators, accusing them of spreading misinformation and threatening India’s national security.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) announced the ban, citing concerns over the dissemination of fake news, provocative narratives, and content that could disrupt public order and harmony in the country. According to government sources, the banned channels were involved in spreading false narratives related to sensitive incidents, including the recent attack in Pahalgam, with the aim of inciting unrest and misleading the public.
Officials emphasized that many of these channels had a significant online following, collectively amassing millions of subscribers and views. Their content, often presented as news or factual reports, was said to be crafted in a manner that could manipulate public perception and influence social stability.
“The government will not tolerate any attempt to spread disinformation or create fear among the people, especially from foreign sources,” a senior I&B ministry official stated. “These actions are part of our ongoing efforts to secure India’s information ecosystem against foreign influence operations.”
This is not the first time India has taken strict action against digital misinformation originating from across the border. In the past, several websites, apps, and social media pages linked to Pakistan-based operatives have been blocked under emergency powers available to the government.
The move has sparked a strong response on social media, with many Indian users welcoming the government’s decision as a necessary step to combat propaganda. However, it has also prompted debates about freedom of expression and the challenges of regulating content in the digital age.
The Pahalgam attack, which resulted in multiple casualties, has heightened tensions in the region and reinforced India’s resolve to clamp down on information warfare tactics. Authorities have also urged citizens to rely on verified news sources and to be cautious about unverified content circulating online.
As the situation evolves, the Indian government has made it clear that it will continue monitoring online platforms closely and take action whenever national security is perceived to be at risk.
