PM Modi’s Visit to Singapore: Strengthening Ties for an Asian Century

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Singapore marked another significant step in strengthening the already robust ties between India and Singapore. The discussions between the two nations focused on deepening cooperation, especially in the context of the larger ASEAN-India partnership. According to Jaideep Mazumdar, Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the dialogue between the leaders emphasized how India and ASEAN can collaborate to shape the future of the Asian century.

Mazumdar highlighted the similarities between India and Singapore, both of which are among the fastest-growing regions in the world. “We have young populations, which is also so important. For both of us, peace is very important to grow together,” he said. The emphasis on peace reflects the shared belief that regional stability is key to continued economic growth and development. Both nations have cultivated strong defense ties, regularly conducting joint military exercises, and working together to ensure regional security.

Economically, Singapore has emerged as India’s largest foreign investor, contributing close to $160 billion since 2000. Last year, Singapore retained its position as the biggest foreign investor in India. This deep financial relationship reflects Singapore’s confidence in India’s growing economy and its strategic importance in Southeast Asia. As both countries look ahead, the focus is shifting towards sustainable technologies, renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, including semiconductors, and sectors like health and skilling. These areas represent the future of economic growth, where India and Singapore are poised to collaborate further.

Mazumdar also noted Singapore’s role as a “safe, secure place for Indians and people of Indian origin to grow and prosper.” The strong cultural and human ties between the two nations have fostered a relationship that is mutually beneficial and continues to deepen. As both countries move towards greater cooperation, especially in emerging industries and technologies, the partnership is expected to benefit both the people of Singapore and India.

The conversations during PM Modi’s visit underscore how Singapore and India are not only partners but also essential players in shaping the future of Asia. Their combined efforts can help turn the 21st century into an era of unprecedented prosperity and development for the region, driven by innovation, peace, and economic collaboration.
