11 March, 2025;The grave of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, located in Khuldabad, Maharashtra, has become a focal point in the state’s political discourse. Recently, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed support for its removal but emphasized that any action must adhere to legal protocols, as the site is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
This development follows remarks by Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi, who described Aurangzeb as a “good administrator,” downplaying his portrayal as a cruel ruler in recent narratives. Azmi’s comments sparked controversy, leading to his suspension from the Maharashtra legislative assembly until the end of the current budget session on March 26.
Aurangzeb’s tomb is notably modest, reflecting his personal wishes. Unlike the grand mausoleums of other Mughal emperors, his grave is an open, mud-covered site, symbolizing his austere lifestyle. The tomb has been under ASI protection since the tenure of a previous Congress-led government, adding legal complexities to any attempts at its removal.
