Rajya Sabha Proceedings Disrupted Amid Opposition Sloganeering; Chairman Dhankhar Calls for Decorum

New Delhi, November 28: The Rajya Sabha witnessed a stormy session on Tuesday as continuous sloganeering by Opposition MPs disrupted proceedings, prompting Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to call for greater decorum in the Upper House. Amid the commotion, the Chairman emphasized the critical role of the Rajya Sabha in strengthening democracy, cautioning that excessive disputation undermines its purpose.

Addressing the members amidst the din, Chairman Dhankhar remarked, “This chamber is more than just a House of debate. Parliamentary disputation weakens our democracy.” His statement underscored the importance of constructive dialogue and mutual respect in parliamentary proceedings, urging lawmakers to uphold the sanctity of the legislative process.

Despite repeated appeals for order, the session remained marred by protests, with Opposition MPs raising slogans and voicing their demands on various issues. The disruption left little room for meaningful discussion, forcing the Chairman to adjourn the House. Proceedings will resume at 11 a.m. on November 29.

This is not the first instance of disruptions in the Rajya Sabha this session, with Opposition leaders accusing the government of stifling debate on pressing national issues. The government, on its part, has criticized the frequent disruptions, calling them counterproductive to legislative progress.

The stalemate highlights the growing need for consensus-building in the functioning of Parliament, which serves as a cornerstone of democratic governance. As the House reconvenes on Wednesday, all eyes will be on whether the two sides can bridge their differences and resume productive discussions on key legislative matters.
