20 January, 2025; In a landmark judgment that has drawn both relief and criticism, a Kolkata court has sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment for the heinous rape and murder of Abhaya, a young woman whose tragic death shook the city. The case, which has been under intense scrutiny since its inception, saw its conclusion with the court delivering a strong message against gender-based violence.
The Verdict and Compensation Offer
The judge, in a detailed verdict, found Sanjay Roy guilty of all charges, including rape and murder. Describing the crime as “a brutal violation of human dignity and trust,” the court emphasized the need for stringent punishment to deter similar acts in the future. Alongside the life sentence, the court also directed the state to provide monetary compensation to Abhaya’s family for their irreparable loss.
However, Abhaya’s parents, who have been vocal throughout the trial, categorically rejected the compensation. “No amount of money can bring our daughter back. We seek justice, not financial solace,” her father stated outside the courtroom. Their stance has resonated with many, highlighting the emotional toll the case has taken on the family.
Legal Battle Far from Over
Despite the conviction, Sanjay Roy’s lawyer indicated their intention to appeal the verdict. “We respect the court’s decision but believe there are grounds to challenge the judgment in a higher court,” the defense counsel said, leaving room for further legal proceedings.
