Sudan: RSF Executes 31 People Near Khartoum, Marking Largest Documented Mass Killing in Region

28 April, 2025; In a horrifying escalation of violence near Khartoum, Sudan, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) executed 31 individuals, marking one of the largest documented mass killings in the region amid the country’s ongoing civil conflict. The attack has intensified fears about the worsening humanitarian crisis and deepening lawlessness as Sudan’s internal strife drags on.

According to reports from human rights organizations and local witnesses, the massacre occurred on the outskirts of the capital, Khartoum, an area that has seen frequent clashes between the RSF and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). Victims are believed to have been targeted based on their perceived loyalty to rival factions or due to ethnic affiliations, although precise motivations remain under investigation.

This atrocity adds to a growing list of grave human rights violations allegedly committed by the RSF. Previous incidents have included mass executions, sexual violence, torture, and the discovery of mass graves in conflict zones. The RSF, originally formed from the infamous Janjaweed militias active during the Darfur conflict, has been repeatedly accused of widespread brutality since the outbreak of full-scale war in Sudan in April 2023.

International condemnation has been swift. Human rights groups have urged the United Nations, African Union, and broader international community to intensify efforts to hold perpetrators accountable. Despite numerous calls for ceasefire and peace talks, the conflict continues unabated, with millions displaced and the civilian death toll mounting.

“The execution of 31 civilians is a heinous crime that must not go unpunished,” said a spokesperson for Human Rights Watch. “We call for urgent international action to protect civilians and ensure that those responsible for such atrocities face justice.”

Meanwhile, humanitarian conditions in Sudan continue to deteriorate rapidly. Access to food, clean water, and medical care remains critically limited, and aid groups face immense challenges in reaching those in need due to ongoing violence and insecurity.

As Sudan edges closer to complete state collapse, the world watches with growing alarm. Without meaningful intervention and a commitment to justice, experts warn that further atrocities are inevitable in what is already one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
