Telangana: Heavy Rain Lashes Parts of Hyderabad City

Hyderabad, Telangana – July 14, 2024

Heavy rains swept across various parts of Hyderabad on Sunday, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching summer heat but also causing significant disruptions. The downpour, which started in the early hours of the morning, intensified throughout the day, leading to waterlogged streets, traffic jams, and power outages in several areas of the city.

The incessant rain led to water accumulation in low-lying areas, causing difficulties for commuters. Key areas like Begumpet, Banjara Hills, Kukatpally, and Ameerpet experienced severe waterlogging, making it challenging for vehicles to navigate. Many commuters were stranded, and several vehicles broke down in the middle of the waterlogged streets, exacerbating traffic congestion.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) deployed emergency teams to clear waterlogged areas and assist those affected by the flooding. Pumps were used to drain water from heavily affected zones, and civic workers were seen clearing debris and unclogging drains to facilitate the smooth flow of rainwater.

GHMC Commissioner, Lokesh Kumar, stated, “Our teams are working round the clock to ensure that waterlogging is addressed promptly and that there is minimal disruption to the daily lives of citizens. We urge residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary and to report any emergencies to our helpline numbers.”

Several parts of the city experienced power outages due to the rain. The Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana (TSSPDCL) reported that repair crews were dispatched to restore electricity as quickly as possible. In some areas, fallen trees and electric poles added to the woes, leading to more extensive repairs.

Authorities have advised residents to exercise caution, especially in areas prone to flooding. Citizens are urged to avoid venturing into waterlogged areas and to keep a safe distance from electric poles and wires. Parents are advised to keep children indoors to prevent accidents.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the heavy rainfall will continue for the next 24 hours. The city is expected to experience intermittent showers, with some areas likely to receive more intense rainfall. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Hyderabad, urging residents to stay updated with weather forecasts and heed any warnings issued by authorities.

While the heavy rain has brought respite from the intense summer heat, it has also highlighted the city’s vulnerability to flooding and the urgent need for improved infrastructure to manage such weather events. Authorities and emergency services continue to work tirelessly to mitigate the impact of the rain, and citizens are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
