Murshidabad, West Bengal – April 13, 2025: In the wake of recent violence that rocked Murshidabad following Friday prayers, West Bengal’s Director General of Police (DGP) has visited the region to take stock of the situation and conduct high-level meetings with senior police officials. The visit comes as part of an urgent effort to restore peace and prevent further escalation of unrest.

The violence, which erupted after Friday prayers, saw clashes between groups, incidents of arson, and confrontations with police personnel. Several policemen were reportedly injured during the chaos, prompting a swift response from law enforcement agencies and the judiciary.
Acting on the seriousness of the situation, the Calcutta High Court has issued a directive to both the state and central governments to take immediate and coordinated action to bring the situation under control. In compliance with the court’s order, the Centre has deployed Border Security Force (BSF) personnel to assist in stabilizing the area.
Security has since been tightened in the affected areas of Murshidabad, with joint patrols by state police and central forces now underway. The DGP’s presence on the ground is being seen as a measure to boost morale among local law enforcement and to assess the need for additional resources.
The Calcutta High Court has further mandated the formulation of a joint action plan by both the West Bengal government and the central administration. The plan aims to ensure a swift and sustainable return to normalcy in the violence-hit district.
Authorities have urged residents to maintain peace and cooperate with law enforcement. Investigations are ongoing to identify the culprits behind the unrest, and additional deployments remain on standby should the situation deteriorate.
The incident has once again highlighted the fragile law and order situation in sensitive regions of the state, underscoring the need for prompt and coordinated responses from both state and central agencies.
